PlayStation and Tobii announced that the upcoming PlayStation VR 2 will feature Tobii’s eye tracking technology. A partnership, optimizing the virtual reality content and games for PSVR 2.
An eye tracking solution enabling foveated rendering: a technique that optimizes the screen’s resolution depending on where the wearer is looking. In other words, Tobii’s eye tracking will blur content in the wearer’s peripheral vision, making games and content run smoother and appear sharper.
“Our partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is continued validation of Tobii’s world-leading technology capabilities to deliver cutting-edge solutions at mass-market scale.” As Anand Srivatsa, CEO of Tobii says.
Initial patents were filed from Sony in early 2021 for its own foveated rendering, while negotiations with Tobii began in February 2022. The combination of Tobii’s and PlayStation’s eye tracking technology will make the PSVR 2’s 4000×2400 resolution even sharper.
We still don’t have an official release date for PSVR 2. But early rumors from Ming-Chi Kuo indicate a Q1 2023 launch.
Nevertheless, the upcoming PSVR 2 will optimize its virtual reality content and games from this partnership between Tobii and Sony Interactive Entertainment, making the wait for the headset even harder.
