Asgard’s Wrath

After God Of War in 2018 sat Norse mythology on the map, Asgard’s Wrath came out in 2019 to great acclaim. This VR title is an Oculus Rift exclusive and is a beefy action RPG with over 20 hours of unique playtime and an atmospheric sense of place. Asgard’s Wrath’s greatest strength is its combat design and mechanics interspersed with clever puzzles to break up the action.

Beat Saber

The next title is well-known and is Beat Saber. This is a rhythm game where you beat neon-colored blocks to the beat of a song you have installed or one of the game’s many pre-installed ones. We select Beat Saber because it is our choice for the best VR rhythm game, and the multiplayer option is an ideal party game to fire up.

Alternatively, if slicing and beating is not your thing, but shooting is, then Pistol Whip is an excellent rhythm shooter also in neon colors.

Blade and Sorcery VR

Blade and Sorcery VR is a first-person medieval-sandbox game focused on brutal realism with an impressive physics engine propelling the immersion of the game. However, what truly stands out is the mods for the game and the thriving community building mods. Although some can be janky, they mix up an already fun game.

BONEWORKS

If shooters with realistic gunplay are up your alley, BONEWORKS is tailor-made for you. Virtual reality can deliver an unparalleled sense of place through interaction, and with BONEWORKS’ smooth animations and interactions with the game world, you are transported to the Monogon Industries research facility where you must escape and shoot baddies.

Demeo

We here at VR-Expert love this one as it is not the first time we are shouting out this VR title. Demeo is a virtual reality Dungeons & Dragons party game dungeon crawler with card mechanics. In short, if you want a spin on your tabletop RPG game nights, the four-player co-op adventure of Demeo is for you.

Elite: Dangerous VR

Elite: Dangerous on PC is a popular title with a passionate and active player base. So when the title enabled virtual reality support, it got even more exciting. To mine space minerals and engage in dog fighting in VR is honestly something else and is something every Oculus Rift owner should have in their library.

Alternatively, if you want a more comprehensive multiplayer component, a focus on space dogfighting, and a STAR WARS™ theme, look no further than STAR WARS™: Squadrons.

Lone Echo 1 and 2

Lone Echo 1 is a superior virtual reality title with compelling characters and excellent puzzles that are balanced well in difficulty. Lone Echo 2 is one you should experience if the first one captivated you with its zero-gravity mechanics, atmospheric survival horror, and emotional narrative. In any case, Lone Echo 1 and 2 remains one the best virtual reality survival-horror titles out there.

Minecraft VR

There is no reason to explain Minecraft, but for the few who don’t know: it is a survival and structure-building sandbox game using virtual Lego bricks. What usually needs to be explained, is the game’s virtual reality compatibility and that it is free of charge! In short, if you play or have played Minecraft and own a Rift, this is a must-try.

Moss

Despite its dated release date, Moss is a neat action-adventure VR title transporting you into the shoes of the rodent: Quill. The fantastical forest setting is beautiful to behold up close in your Rift and the story is sweet: an all-around good time.

Onward

Colloquially known as “CS:GO in VR”, Onward is a tactical shooter capable of being played in both single-player and multiplayer. Like CS:GO, Onward is not a run-and-gun shooter but is a team-based tactical first-person shooter with frequent flanking and covering. If you are into Counter Strike or have been, you should check out Onward.

Superhot VR

Again, Superhot VR is one of those titles that VR-Expert has pointed out numerous times, and is a testament to its quality and innovative concept. Despite its dated release date, Superhot’s low-poly art style is timeless. But where the title shines is its simple yet incredible fun and inventive concept of ‘time only moves when you move’ shooter-puzzler. The game was fun without virtual reality, but VR Superhot was elevated to even greater heights.

The Room VR: A Dark Matter

The mystery-solving puzzler The Room VR: A Dark Matter is in a sense, a horror escape room game. This title takes full advantage of the immersive qualities of virtual reality and throws you into a secretive room that needs to be escaped. Also, several visual nods to other horror media are littered throughout.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners

If you discount for a second the moniker of the TV show title: “The Walking Dead”, this VR game is chock full of 15 hours of nailbiting content. Decisions must be made to survive the zombie apocalypse, and with VR, it feels more real than ever. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is a survival shooter with impactful narrative decisions to survive. In our opinion, it is one of the best VR titles out there, and the developer continually adds new content to it.

Tokyo Chronos

Walking simulators or narrative-driven VR games are few and far between in VR. Because of this, Tokyo Chronos offers something special and is a game any walking-sim fan must try out. It has a unique anime visual aesthetic, and the storyline is strong throughout.
