The long-awaited Pico 4 Ultra is finally released to the public, and it will be worth the wait. Following numerous leaks speculating about its name—ranging from “Pico 4S” to “Pico 5″—the VR manufacturer confirmed the official name as “Pico 4 Ultra.” This Headset will be available available as a consumer model “Pico 4 Ultra” and an enterprise module “Pico 4 Ultra Enterprise”.
At first glance, the Pico 4 Ultra may seem similar to its predecessor, but don’t be tricked by its familiar appearance. This new headset comes packed with features that truly live up to the “Ultra” name.
While the Meta Quest 3 initially appeared to be the next-generation standalone VR headset, the Pico 4 Ultra is sure to take over the market. Although its design remains largely unchanged, the specifications have been significantly upgraded across the board, making it a formidable competitor.
One of the standout features of the Pico 4 Ultra is its improved mixed reality capabilities. Instead of a single 16MP RGB camera, the headset now boasts dual 32MP RGB cameras and a Time of Flight sensor. This complex sensor like a LiDAR system uses infrared light to measure the distance to and from objects. It is more accurate than camera based tracking and doesn’t need as much light to function. This upgrade allows the Pico 4 Ultra to outperform the Meta Quest 3 in mixed reality tasks.
Additionally, the extra camera enables the headset to record spatial video—a feature supported by only the Apple Vision Pro and the newest iPhones. These 3D videos offer a more immersive experience compared to traditional 2D video on a flat display.
The Pico 4 Ultra is powered by the latest Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, like the Meta Quest 3, which delivers 2.5 times more GPU performance compared to the original XR2 chip in the Pico 4. This upgrade ensures smoother and more responsive performance, enhancing the overall VR experience.
The new Pico 4 Ultra comes with a significant upgrade in both RAM and storage compared to the Meta Quest 3 and the original Pico 4 Enterprise. It features 12 GB of RAM, up from the 8 GB found in those other headsets, offering smoother performance and better multitasking.
Storage has also been doubled, with 256 GB now being the standard. The previous 128 GB model is no longer available. What this means is that you will have plenty of space for all your games and applications right out of the box.
The battery has also received an upgrade, with an additional 400 mAh compared to the non-Ultra model. The battery remains positioned at the back of the head strap, ensuring a balanced design that minimizes downward pressure on the face.
Charging speed has been significantly improved as well, thanks to the 45W fast charging capability, more than twice as fast as the older Pico 4.
The Pico 4 Ultra now supports Wi-Fi 7, further improving upon the impressive Wi-Fi chips found in the Pico 4 and Quest 3. With Wi-Fi 7, you can expect more stable and potentially clearer video streaming on the headset. While Wi-Fi 6 could handle 20-25 devices simultaneously, Wi-Fi 7 allows up to 40-50 devices, making it ideal for high-demand environments.
The Pico 4 Ultra continues to offer a 4K resolution, eliminating the screen-door effect that can plague lower-resolution headsets. The resolution (2160×2160) and field of view (105° Ă— 105°) remain the same as the standard Pico 4, still surpassing the displays of the Meta Quest 3. Additionally, the displays on the Pico 4 Ultra are now 25% brighter, offering a more vivid and immersive gaming experience.
The Pico 4 Ultra also introduces redesigned controllers. The tracking ring around the grip has been removed, resulting in a sleeker and lighter design that resembles the Quest Pro controllers. This change halves the weight of the controllers, making them more comfortable to use.
If the battery performance of these new controllers is similar to that of the Pico 4 , you can expect amazing battery life without frequent recharging or replacements. The Pico 4 Enterprise’s controllers easily last over 50 hours, with some users reporting battery life of over 100 hours.
